A.A. Bondy at Club Garibaldi
After the disintegration of his band Verbena—which made records for Merge and later with Dave Grohl (as producer) for Capitol—A.A. Bondy ditched his old grungy sound. With When The Devil’s Loose, he’s now onto a second album of simply accompanied, mostly acoustic music under his own name. The new approach has a spiritual bent, and glows with the aura—if not exact lyrical subject matter—of old folk songs recast for the 21st century. Such a drastic jump from rock noise to rustic crooning might alienate followers of a more straightforward musician, but Bondy has proved to be an adaptable and appealingly nuanced performer.
