Absolutely, Scrimshaw, and Heavy Hand at Cactus Club
Milwaukee’s love affair with melodic post-punk stretches backward (at least) to the days of ’90s titans like Cap’n Jazz, Compound Red, and Alligator Gun. Clearly indebted to the DNA of those groups, but with a 21st-century genetic profile all its own, Absolutely returns the city to an era of heavy, angular, and anthemic scream-alongs. The band’s much-hyped debut, Learns To Love Mistakes, was recorded in 2010 by the prolific Shane Hochstetler of Howl Street Recordings. Headliner Scrimshaw features members of Milwaukee’s Crappy Dracula and The Trusty Knife, but the group’s deeply weird (and giddily infectious) spirit is all its own. Songs like “Donkey Venom” and “Hip To Hip Combat” may sound like Ween-like 4-track experiments on record, though they translate to the stuff of dance-party fever-dreams live.
