Aimee Mann + Ted Leo at The Pabst Theater

Aimee Mann has put out one of the most quietly consistent catalogs of the last deacde. She started off under the guise of ‘Til Tuesday (remember “Voices Carry”?), but came back with songs on the Magnolia soundtrack and her breakthrough, Bachelor No. 2 Or, The Last Remains Of The Dodo. Her work since has followed a similar line while staring down, cleverly, the dark cloud hovering above every silver lining. Mann has said that the poppier sound of her new album Charmer was inspired in part by the buzzy late-’70s rock records of The Cars and Blondie, but more than anything, Charmer sounds like late-period Pretenders, once Chrissie Hynde had settled into wizened elder mode. Opener Ted Leo is invariably pegged as “literary” and “political,” as his dense tangles of English only serve to fuel his scorched-earth campaign to rescue pop and punk by way of positive attack.
