Amanda Palmer at Turner Hall Ballroom

Singer-pianist Amanda Palmer is best known as one-half of The Dresden Dolls, the bombastic “cabaret punk” outfit she fronts with drummer Brian Viglione. The duo hasn’t released a new studio album since 2006’s Yes, Virginia—a compilation of unreleased material called No, Virginia followed in 2008—but Palmer has been busy. She performs as part of conjoined-twin gimmick act Evelyn Evelyn, and in 2011 released Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under, a solo album mostly culled from live performances of songs written, performed, and recorded in Australia and New Zealand. Now, thanks to a record-breaking Kickstarter fund, she’s a got a new record, Theatre Is Evil, and a nationwide art exhibit/love show tour with backing band The Grand Theft Orchestra. Fans of her day job should have no trouble making the transition to Palmer’s solo work, as the music is virtually indistinguishable from that of the Dolls. (Not that that’s a bad thing.)
