A large part of the appeal of a jukebox musical is the built-in audience members who already toe-tap to your show-stopping number. Rock Of Ages and We Will Rock You have everybody who never quite recovered from the 1980s, and Jersey Boys has 65-year-olds and the supporting cast of The Sopranos to fill seats. It’s less clear who American Idiot is meant to appeal to. Based on Green Day’s 2004 album of the same name, which garnered decent critical acclaim and seems unlikely to cement itself into the public consciousness the way “We Are The Champions” and “Walk Like A Man” have. Spring Awakening’s Michael Mayer co-wrote the musical’s book with Green Day’s Billie Joel Armstrong, expanding on the album’s trapped-in-the-suburbs ennui to include post-9/11 anxiety and what seems to be the exact plot of that terrible music video for “Wake Me Up When September Ends.”
