ASAP Rocky, ASAP Mob, Schoolboy Q, and Danny Brown at The Rave/Eagles Ballroom

ASAP Rocky’s budding career is already being defined by a glaring contradiction: He’s from New York, but raps like he’s from Houston. The Harlem rapper with the decidedly non-Harlem sound has nonetheless made quick friends in high places—RCA inked him for six digits and Drizzy invited him on tour. He blew up rap radars in 2011 with the video for “Purple Swag,” a love-letter to weed, gold fronts, and candy-paint cars, and his syrupy LiveLoveA$AP mix-tape was one of 2011’s best releases, hip-hop or otherwise. As far as mix-tapes go, this one raises the bar for young Rocky, whose first studio album, also titled LongLiveA$AP, is due later this month. If Rocky gets as high as he says he does, though, it shouldn’t be a hard bar to reach.
