Balmorhea and Noxroy at Cactus Club
Traditional percussion instruments were noticeably absent from early Balmorhea recordings, but they’re all over both sides of the group’s 2010 album Candor / Clamor. Ever the restless sonic explorers, Balmorhea heads for Phillip Glass-like environs on the 7-inch’s A-side, wrapping spy-movie guitar and ethereal vocals around a core of arpeggiated marimba. The flipside lives up to its title, a pulsating track driven by chattering drums and a piano which sounds like it’s sending out a message in Morse code. The group is currently touring in support of its newest album, Stranger.
