Beauty And The Beast (1946) at UWM Union Theatre

Made while France was still visibly scarred by the events of World War II, Jean Cocteau coaxed an old-world beauty out of his wounded homeland with 1946’s Beauty And The Beast. Cocteau mixes several fairy tale tropes—among them wicked sisters, scheming suitors, and enchanted servants—into his telling of this timeless fable of inner beauty and true love, creating one of world cinema’s enduring black-and-white fantasias. In a dual (technically triple) role as the doting beast and the jealous Avenant, future Fantômas and Smiths cover-sleeve star Jean Marais shows remarkable emotional depth—especially when his face is covered in fur. Tonight’s screening at UWM will be from a restored 35mm print.
