Ben Williams and Hayward Williams at Linneman's
Singer-songwriter Hayward Williams is a young Wisconsin standby best heard with a bit of patience. His voice, deeper and huskier than his youth and skinny frame would suggest, slowly uncoils over folk- and blues-rooted tunes with a private and earnest bent. Williams has been touring behind his latest album, 2007’s Another Sailor’s Dream, trying to build on the record’s good reception with Europe’s Americana fans. Despite its title—2008’s Expensive Vomit In A Cheap Hotel—the second album from Sleeping In The Aviary opens up the band’s tender side amid its lo-fi scars and unruly freak-outs. As always, the band deliberately leaves a lot of loose ends, as random bits of chatter and noise make their way onto the tracks—though that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
