    Boom! at UWM Union Theatre

In the rush to canonize the late Elizabeth Taylor’s onscreen output, it’s often forgotten that the cinematic grande dame also starred in a few campy duds. Boom! is, at least, an entertainingly campy dud. Starring alongside then-husband Richard Burton in roles that aren’t age-appropriate for either (Burton’s too old, Taylor’s too young), a dying Taylor terrorizes the inhabitants of her island stronghold/mansion as she grapples with mortality—and, judging from her off-kilter performance, some wicked hangovers. Boom! is either a failed work of art or an artistic peek at failure—either way, it’s one of the most morbidly fascinating artifacts of Taylor’s lengthy career.
