Broken Lizard at The Pabst Theater
The Broken Lizard comedy troupe, which produced Super Troopers, Club Dread, and Beerfest, saw diminishing returns with each successive outing; Beerfest, in particular, received more than its fair share of harsh criticism, most of which dismissed it as a “drunken frat-boy romp.” Well, duh—perhaps the problem wasn't the group's films themselves, but inflated expectations due to the success of Super Troopers. In short, Broken Lizard embraces its silly side, and the results speak for themselves. Its latest film, The Slammin' Salmon, is about waiters at a restaurant who compete to earn the most money in a night, and it received rave reviews at this year's SXSW; its public release, currently slated for late 2009, could be the end of the diminishing returns.
