Chicago at BMO Harris Pavilion (Summerfest)
By virtue of its size and its members’ progressive, wide-ranging musical interests, Chicago managed to be one of the most versatile bands of the album-rock era, capable of turning in jagged rockers (“25 Or 6 To 4”), jazzy social commentary (“Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?”), and tender, prom-ready ballads (every single the band recorded with Peter Cetera on lead vocals between 1976 and 1985). Of course, four-plus decades of recording and performing leaves more for its current live shows than overplayed classic rock-radio staples and Cetera’s lingering saccharine. The fact that four of its six surviving founding members remain also means those deeper cuts will sound just as good as they did fresh out of the gatefold sleeve.
