Child Bite, Lamb's Legs, and Fahri at Cactus Club

Organ swell, a singer whose voice seems to crack at will, pointed guitar and sax bleats, and drums and bass that just edge over onto the right side of over-charged: Detroit’s Child Bite takes a spare-parts jumble of new-wave, no-wave, and noise-rock sounds and shreds it into multicolored confetti. On record, the band’s not quite as sloppy or nuts as that might suggest; 2008 album Fantastic Gusts Of Blood burns through tightly executed songs without ever feeling too planned-out or cluttered with ideas, and 2010’s The Living Breathing Organ Summer unplugs a bit in favor of real-instrument cacophony, as one might expect from the title. The band continues to wear a certain wacky dissonance on its sleeve on the new Monomania EP, but damned if there isn’t a mischievously sharp pop sense at work behind it all.
