Madison duo Daniel And The Lion took some cues from Bon Iver on their 2009 EPs—Secret Stuff and Handmade—putting plenty of warm room-sound around Jimmie Linville’s soft crooning and Daniel Pingrey’s marimba and piano. The two have even taken some press photos amid snow and barren trees. These touches don’t mask the actual songwriting, which is of a more cheery, less subtle, yet thoroughly charming variety. Launching a Kickstarter campaign in late 2010 to record its debut full-length, Sweet Teeth, the band blew away its fundraising goal thanks to the sweet “Baraboo” and delicate “The Chase,” both featured on the album. The band recently released Side A to its follow-up album, Death Head, in May, with Side B due this month.
