David Gray at The Riverside Theater
Thanks to support from Dave Matthews, Englishman David Gray finally broke through in the States with his fourth album, 1998’s White Ladder. His music is always well-crafted but sticks to safe sounds more than it should, exemplified by 2005’s staggeringly bland Life In Slow Motion, a critically hammered (but commercially successful) slide into arena pop. Last year's Draw The Line was a conscious attempt at shaking things up by jettisoning his former co-writer and bringing in a new backing band (as well as guest singers Jolie Holland and Annie Lennox), and indeed is more passionate and approachable than Life. Gray's moody, mid-tempo piano balladry, though, has never been about fire and brimstone, but rather measured, thoughtful ruminations, and Draw The Line keeps to a slow boil.
