Dusty Medical Records 5th Anniversary Party at Club Garibaldi

The Goodnight Loving has written some of the best rock ’n’ roll songs to come out of its hometown of Milwaukee the past few years—it’s just a shame you can’t always hear them. Live and on record, GNL plays behind a blaring sonic wall that sometimes obscures the craftiness of its spirited country-punk songwriting (though not enough to hinder 2007’s great Crooked Lake). Thankfully, the band came through a little more clearly on 2008’s The Goodnight Loving, which found the group no worse for wear from its prolific recording schedule. The album wasn’t much of a departure—the music is still based in twang and ’50s rock—but it fortified the band’s strengths, and added to an already impressive (and quickly growing) discography. Sadly, the group didn’t put out a record in ’09, so here’s hoping some new tunes arrive in 2010.
