Eric Johnson at Turner Hall Ballroom

America loves its virtuosos, and niche Austin, Texas-born guitarist Eric Johnson ably fits. Since the late-’60s Johnson, 56, has wowed audiences with his laser-precise instrumental rock, incorporating touches of jazz and new age into the mix. Imagine Jimi Hendrix’s livewire soul traded for a mathematician’s exactness, and you get the idea. Johnson’s biggest commercial success came in 1990, when his third solo LP, Ah Via Musicom, went platinum. He went on to win multiple Grammys and was named “Guitarist of the Year” by Guitar Player magazine in 1993. The Strat-wielding axeman’s last LP was 2010’s Up Close, his first in five years.
