The Rhymesayers empire has helped make the Midwest a unique source for intelligent hip-hop, most notably honing the skills of artists such as Atmosphere and MF Doom. St. Paul’s Eyedea And Abilities is no exception. The two have been making magic together since the late '90s, and made considerable headway with 2004’s well-received E&A. They took some time apart in the five years since, with Abilities moving to Milwaukee and Eyedea experimenting with rock and free jazz in other projects. They regrouped triumphantly with this year’s By The Throat, which sees Abilities scratching his way around the turntables, creating an unmatched background for Eyedea’s brute-force lyrical delivery. It all comes together for nothing short of a mind-expanding rap experience.
