Free Energy, Juiceboxxx, and Big Fun 4Ever at Mad Planet
Though some critics gave them a bad rap as Pavement wannabes due to the undeniable vocal similarities between Paul Sprangers and Stephen Malkmus, Twin Cities band Hockey Night’s straightforward lyricism and pure-love ethos was the antithesis of Pavement’s too-cool inscrutability. Hockey Night called it quits in 2007, but Sprangers and longtime Hockey Night six-string sparring-partner Scott Wells are now making a similar-sounding splash with Free Energy, a new band out of Philadelphia that has already drawn international attention thanks to the imprimatur of LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy, who produced the group’s debut—due out this winter—for his heavyweight indie label, DFA Records.
