Fresh Cut Collective at Cactus Club
Fresh Cut Collective walks a path forged by Milwaukee predecessors Def Harmonic, Black Elephant, and Growing Nation, playing groove-centric hip-hop. The group’s rock pedigree—it includes former members of Fly Neurotic and Those Royals—allows it to slink in and out of genres, feels, and textures, fusing hip-hop with a variety of musical forms. Fresh Cut Collective’s forays into 311-style reggae-rock are a little predictable, but when the group merges hip-hop with chamber-rock, it gets weirdly refreshing in a hurry. The group’s 2012 album, Re-Frame (Part One), is one of its best, kicking off with the effortlessly infectious “DaDa DaDa.”
