Fresh Cut Collective, Rusty Ps, and Jah Works at Mad Planet
Fresh Cut Collective walks a path forged by Milwaukee predecessors Def Harmonic, Black Elephant, and Growing Nation, playing groove-centric hip-hop. Though the music is built to accommodate the steady, flowing rhymes delivered by front man Adebisi, Fresh Cut’s rock pedigree—it includes former members of Fly Neurotic and Those Royals— allows the group to slink in and out of genres, feels and textures, fusing hip-hop with a variety of musical forms. Fresh Cut Collective’s forays into 311-style reggae-rock are a little predictable, but when the group merges hip-hip with chamber rock, it gets weirdly refreshing in a hurry. Here FCC is joined by Milwaukee hip-hop legends Rusty Ps, who carried the local scene torch back when many area MCs were still in shortpants.
