Fresh Cut Collective, The Fatty Acids, and Kane Place Record Club at Cactus Club
Fresh Cut Collective walks a path forged by Milwaukee predecessors Def Harmonic, Black Elephant, and Growing Nation, playing groove-centric hip-hop. Fresh Cut’s rock pedigree—it includes former members of Fly Neurotic and Those Royals—allows the group to slink in and out of genres, feels, and textures, fusing hip-hop with a variety of musical forms. The band’s forays into 311-style reggae-rock are a little predictable, but when Fresh Cut merges hip-hip with chamber rock, it gets weirdly refreshing in a hurry. Milwaukee’s tireless Fatty Acids, meanwhile, have become fixtures of the local music scene, thanks in part to a constant stream of boisterous, high-energy shows, and a pair of terrific albums: 2010’s Stop Berries, Berries, And Berries, Berries, and 2011’s Leftover Monsterface.
