Futurebirds + Juniper Tar at The Hotel Foster
If Futurebirds’ full-length debut, 2010’s Hampton’s Lullaby, was a weather report, it would be hazy and humid, with a chance of thundershowers after dark. In other words, it’s very much a product of Athens, Georgia—a sleepy bohemian college town that spawned a different kind of Southern rock, informed by punk, psych-rock, bubblegum pop, and whatever else you got at the used record store—since the days of formative R.E.M. gigs at the 40 Watt Club. Opener Juniper Tar released the terrific Since Before in 2012, which makes the group’s back catalog seem a bit timid and preparatory. 2010’s The Howl Street EP was a major step forward from the band’s 2008 debut, but even it sounds languorous and uncertain compared with the new album. This is a group whose reputation rides on its rich vocal harmonies, which are as good as ever; the songwriting and conceptual prowess have finally caught up.
