Gabriel Kahane and Aoife O'Donovan at Shank Hall

Gabriel Kahane walks the blurred line between classical composition and cerebral pop, yielding to neither side while seeking innovative ways to synthesize the two tendencies. One project, Craigslistlieder, set eight anonymous Craigslist postings to a punchy piano score (sample lyric: “Must enjoy video games, must own a video-game system!”), and 2008’s self-titled debut album featured lush orchestration, literate lyrics, and a young composer’s sense of play. A second singer-songwriter album, Where Are The Arms, was released in 2011, but don’t expect Kahane to abandon his composition-based background. The easiest comparison is Sufjan Stevens—the two musicians are also friends—but Kahane’s classical training shines through even his folksiest material. (CANCELED DUE TO EXTREME WEATHER.)
