    Harlem Globetrotters at Bradley Center

When the Harlem Globetrotters were formed in Chicago in the ’20s, an all-black basketball team seemed—like its adopted neighborhood—like something exotic and wild. Then the Globetrotters’ domination of white teams forced the NBA to eradicate color lines, and the once-groundbreaking team became known predominantly as a comedy act—even accused in the Civil Rights era of “Uncle Tomming” in exchange for fame. While the Trotters may have made some questionable choices (Gilligan’s Island, anyone?), there’s no denying that their antics have been a positive influence on thousands of children over the years. And despite commonly held wisdom to the contrary, the outcomes of the games aren’t predetermined—though the team has only lost about 350 out of more than 23,000 games.
