Herman Astro and The Right Now at Mad Planet
Milwaukee’s affable Herman Astro is a relatively new blip on the local music radar—the group began with a sole 2009 EP to its name—but its dedication and good-natured perseverance seem destined to turn it into a major player soon enough. Bluesy, jazzy, and funky in equal measures, the group may contain all of the hallmarks of a jam band, but a mature sound and a crack rhythm section (highlighted by drummer Cody Calderon) set it apart from the dorm-ready pack. Tonight, the band celebrates the release of its first full-length album, Chico. Recorded live, the disc nicely captures Herman Astro’s winning chemistry, and shows off singer Zachary Pluer’s strong, soulful vocals to great effect.
