The Hold Steady at U.S. Cellular Connection Stage (Summerfest)
It’s time to stop calling The Hold Steady a bar band, and not just because the Brooklyn-based group is too big to play bars anymore. More pertinently, The Hold Steady’s sound has become so lush and complex that all those old Springsteen comparisons are finally starting to make sense. True, the music became slightly less layered last year when keyboardist Franz Nicolay left the band prior to the recording of Heaven Is Whenever, taking his whirling organ lines with him. But despite being a man down, the band's m.o. hasn't changed: The new album exudes non-stop nostalgia for the good old days, with Craig Finn's reminiscing sounding even more wistful than usual.
