Holy Balm, Stacian, and Dirty Dancing at Cactus Club
Don’t call Holy Balm a synth outfit. Instead, the Sydney, Australia trio prefers to align itself with a number of sub-genres you probably didn’t know existed: “mutant new wave,” “free-form house,” “digital trashcan tribalism.” No matter what you call it, the female-fronted Holy Balm is a moody, goth-flavored affair, bringing to mind both downbeat Krautrock and the very best of ’70s-era femme Brit-pop. The band signed to L.A.-based label Not Not Fun for its 2012 debut album, It’s You, and has slowly been building a dance-happy following on its first tour of the U.S. Don’t expect hazy atmospherics and endless synth navel-gazing: Holy Balm’s live shows are rousing celebrations full of live percussion and disco-damaged party jams.
