Hope Sandoval And The Warm Inventions at The Pabst Theater
Sultry-voiced and strikingly pretty singer Hope Sandoval helped make Mazzy Star one of the more memorable of the Velvet Underground-inspired alterna-rock bands of the '90s, thanks to liltingly sad songs like "Fade Into You," on which Sandoval's breathy vocals recall Nico's more ethereal moments. Sandoval also developed a reputation as willfully aloof, both in her cryptic interviews and notoriously uncomfortable stage presence, which she's attributed to near-crippling stage fright. Perhaps that's why it took eight years for Sandoval and backing band Warm Inventions (featuring My Bloody Valentine drummer Colm Ó Cíosóig) to release her second solo album, the lilting and beautiful newThrough The Devil Softly. Despite a very long hiatus, Mazzy Star reportedly has not broken up either, and may soon release its fourth disc. (Don't hold your breath, though.)
