Jane Siberry at Turner Hall Ballroom
Canadian singer Issa—formerly known as Jane Siberry—briefly flirted with the mainstream, but in hindsight it’s obvious that she was never destined to cross over: Her music, though pleasant and tuneful, was too subtle and smart to reach a wide audience, despite support from fans like Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno, and k.d. lang. Her distance from the mainstream increased in 2006, when the singer-songwriter changed her name, discarded or sold most of her possessions, and began work on a trilogy of records that combine dream-pop, smooth jazz, and motivational spoken word. The recently released With What Shall I Keep Warm proves that she hasn’t cut all ties to the past—its cover bears both the names Issa and Jane Siberry.
