Kayhan Kalhor And Brooklyn Rider at Pitman Theater
Kayhan Kalhor is a Kurdish Iranian virtuoso of the kamancheh, a four-stringed, upright Persian fiddle also known as a “spike fiddle.” (Got all that?) And while that description may sound like homework, the music Kalhor produces is anything but. Fans of classical music, world-music, and post-rock will all find something to enjoy in the musician’s moody, daring, and decidedly modern compositions. For tonight’s “Alverno Presents” show, Kalhor makes his first Milwaukee appearance since 2005, and is joined by Brooklyn Rider, a young, American string quartet in the mold Kronos Quartet. A 2008 collaboration, Silent City, found both Kalhor and Brooklyn Rider at the top of their games, and even nabbed a positive review from venerable indie website Pitchfork.
