The Klezmatics at Miramar Theatre
The traditional Jewish musical form known as klezmer has seen a big resurgence over the past few years, and The Klezmatics are at the forefront, with nine records and appearances on Late Night With David Letterman and the BBC’s John Peel Show to their credit. The band’s postmodern take on the ancient form combines protest-song lyrics with joyously danceable melodies nestled somewhere between polka and Middle Eastern music. Recently, The Klezmatics have followed in the footsteps of Billy Bragg and Wilco by delving into the back catalog of Woody Guthrie on the albums Wonder Wheel and Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanukkah, a surprisingly workable marriage of the group’s music and a recently discovered set of Guthrie lyrics that the folk maestro never got around to setting to music.
