The word on Leonard Cohen’s live show fluctuates somewhere between serene joy and utter breathlessness, which shouldn’t be surprising for an artist followed with such zeal. From the early folk masterpieces he made in the ’60s to his later futuristic cabaret (not to mention his novels, which have been more than well-received), Cohen remains arguably our most literary songwriter. And his mystique has only grown in the wake of Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man, a 2005 documentary that worked to survey Cohen’s life and work anew. He makes his first Milwaukee appearance in 38 years behind his latest album, Old Ideas, which returns to themes that have obsessed the 78-year-old singer-songwriter since his 1968 debut, Songs Of Leonard Cohen: misery and ecstasy, and that they’ve always been equally vital byproducts of a life lived to the fullest.
