Lisa Gatewood and Andrew Lardner at Helene Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts (UWM)
Originally part of the Linneman’s singer-songwriter scene that also nurtured Heidi Spencer and Christopher Porterfield, Lisa Gatewood has been writing and performing sad-eyed folk songs for years. Live, she’s an engaging presence, lightening the mood between her emotionally crushing songs with often-hilarious, self-deprecating stage patter. Gatewood released her debut album, I’ve Read Salinger, in 2007, and recently released her long-awaited follow-up, Midway. Featuring the musical talents of Todd Richards, Janet Schiff, Chris Vos, and others, the album is filled with late-afternoon tales of love and loss, all delivered in Gatewood’s gorgeous, distinctive voice.
