Lisa Gatewood, Jonathan Burks, and Quinn Scharber at Linneman's
Milwaukee singer-songwriter Jonathan Burks uses a likeably dry croon to sing the praises of rock ’n’ roll, Dumpster-diving on the East Side, and the philosophical insights that come from having burrs in your pants. His 2006 release, Bones Of The Tree, bore the stark sonic hallmarks of Will Oldham’s deep-woods country-folk records—it was produced by Oldham collaborator Colin Gagon—but he’s since taken a more likeably raucous turn on records like 2009’s Brown Paper Bag and the new Loudmouth Soup, which spins funny, deadpan tales about loneliness and drinking that sound like a debauched Jonathan Richman.
