Lotus and Moon Hooch at Turner Hall Ballroom
A quintet that first found its home within the jam scene, Lotus has evolved into an electronic group whose hybrid sound (a mix of jam-rock, electronica, funk, jazz, trance, and drum-and-bass) defies most categorization. Lotus transcends the darker beats typical of its current hometown of Philadelphia (see: Disco Biscuits, lots of psy-trance) to emit a more inviting sound, infused with funky medleys and worldly beats. On its 2011 self-titled full-length, as well as 2009’s Feather On Wood and Oil On Glass EPs, Lotus keeps up the free-form grooving, dipping a bit into indie-pop and post-rock sounds amid sleek syncopation. A new album, Build—featuring crunchy, groove-tastic single “Massif”—is set for a February 19 release.
