The Midwest Beat, Lover!, Bass Drum Of Death, and Death Dream at Cactus Club

Wisconsin vintage-pop enthusiasts The Midwest Beat stretched the meaning of “retro” last year, tracking an album inside Madison’s historic (and acoustically immaculate) Gates Of Heaven synagogue. At The Gates expands on the jangles, harmonies, and perky tempos that first endeared the band to local music geeks, but also channels the damn-near-innocent heart of ’60s soul singles, and at times gets a lot more psychedelic. “Color Radio” uses the Gates’ space to capture some trippy layers of vocal harmonies behind a feisty rhythm section. Here the group plays support for the Chicago band Lover!, fronted by former Jay Reatard cohort Rich Crook, who indulges a similarly sticky sweet garage-pop jones on the No Dreams Please EP without the macho posturing.
