Morgan Thorson: Spaceholder Festival at Pitman Theater
Minneapolis-based choreographer Morgan Thorson has received plenty of high-minded accolades in her career—a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship, a 2011 USA Fellowship—but her work is anything but stuffy. In addition to solo and ensemble dance, Morgan uses light, sound, and objects to create multi-sensory, evening-length experiences that challenge classic dance tropes while still remaining accessible. For her latest show, Spaceholder Festival, Thorson seeks to understand the ever-elusive human condition through the “histories” of our movements. If the intellectualization of this show—and modern dance in general—seems daunting, simply sit back and watch the human body in motion. Nothing could be simpler, and nothing could be more effortlessly profound.
