Director Gus Van Sant has never lacked for ambition. The auteur of the shot-by-shot remake of Psycho has always had a long reach, but not always a grasp to match. His 1991 film, My Own Private Idaho, is a mash-up of two stories: that of street hustler Mike (River Phoenix) and the search for his long-lost mother; and that of Mike’s best friend Scott (Keanu Reeves) and his conflicted role as both a street hustler and heir to the throne of his millionaire father. But while Scott’s story is an interesting riff on Shakespeare, it isn’t nearly as compelling as Mike’s circular and disorienting quest, nor does Reeves’ performance stand up against Phoenix’s. The film can be lyrical and heartbreaking, but it holds together as well as an unrequited romance.
