Neil Hamburger and J.P. Incorporated at Cactus Club

The trail of defeat is a long and steady one for comedic mutant Neil Hamburger, an old-fashioned, washed-up nightclub stand-up stricken with 21st-century cynicism, vulgarity, celebrity obsession, a nasty cough, and the greasiest hairline this side of a pomade convention. As Hamburger, an intentionally pathetic character played to the hilt by Gregg Turkington, cringes his way through literally hundreds of tawdry jokes on such topics as Madonna, Domino’s Pizza, his ex-wife, and Michael Jackson, audience members will likely be equal parts bored, horrified, and transfixed by the most godawful stand-up they’ve ever seen. He’s taken a couple of breaks from being heckled between punch lines to record 2008’s novelty album Neil Hamburger Sings Country Winners; a DVD follow-up, Western Music & Variety; and even his own iPhone app, Shaky Advice From Neil Hamburger.
