Paul Oakenfold at Miller Lite Oasis (Summerfest)
It’s been the better part of a decade since Paul Oakenfold could lay claim to the status of the world’s most popular DJ, but the one-time undisputed champ still keeps chugging along. After playing an important role in the early days of British rave culture, Oakenfold became a leader in the superstar realms of trance and progressive before moving into working with washed-up pop stars (Madonna) and scoring for film and television. His next project is an attempt to resurrect his glory days as a psy-trance pioneer in the wake of that genre’s resurgence. (Thanks, Infected Mushroom.) If he pulls it off, he may elevate himself from washed-up has-been to elder statesman—quite a leap, but not out of the question for a man who has managed to stick around as long as Oakenfold already has.
