Rabid Rabbit, Backs, Gravedirt, and Moss Folk at Frank's Power Plant
Chicago's Rabid Rabbit may share some of the spirit of dazzlingly beautiful avant-heavy bands like Jesu and the now-defunct Isis, but takes the opposite approach, tearing the music down to its foundations and then adding on a new sub-basement or two. Emphasis on the "sub" part: The band includes two bassists, whose under-drone riffs flow together like a wayward concrete shipment and the river Styx on the band's 2008 self-titled album. For all of Rabid Rabbit's sonic deconstruction, though, the mostly instrumental songs feel quite focused, thanks to Mike Tsoulos' unrelenting drum assault, bassist Andrea Jablonski's vocal interjections, and noisy guitar tangents that complement the plodding low-end riffs.
