Railroad Earth at Turner Hall Ballroom
Railroad Earth takes a page from the Dead’s book by using traditional American song forms like bluegrass, folk, and country in service of what are essentially pop songs. But Railroad Earth foregoes drawn-out jams in favor of relatively concise tunes. Nevertheless, jam-band fans appear to have taken Railroad Earth to heart, and the band regularly plays with the likes of The String Cheese Incident and at various outdoor music festivals. The band’s 2008 disc, Amen Corner, kept its reliance on tasteful plucking and vocal harmonies, and the group’s 2010 self-titled album bends and stretches that formula, both musically and temporally on rolling numbers like “Jupiter And The 119” or the nearly 12-minute instrumental “Spring-Heeled Jack.”
