Richard Thompson and Loudon Wainwright III at The Pabst Theater

Since his 1970 debut, after which he was hailed as a “New Dylan,” Loudon Wainwright III has released more than 20 albums, all blending folk, country, and rock with storytelling and humor. He's joined on this tour by Richard Thompson, whose jaw-dropping virtuosity on guitar is a bit misleading: He busts out impossible runs and intricate fretting when it fits, and during his formidable solos, but it's always the song that's most important. Beginning with his pioneering folk-rock band Fairport Convention, Thompson has often applied his talents to less traditional music. His work with (now ex-) wife Linda and his solo albums may have their roots in folk, but the edgy songs clearly have a place in the progressive present.
