Rise Against + The Gaslight Anthem, Hot Water Music at The Rave/Eagles Ballroom
It’s easy to write off Chicago-bred Rise Against as just another quasi-political punk band that hit it big after signing to the majors. And although both statements ring true, Rise Against has swayed critics by exuding a sense of self-awareness, something that certainly seems lacking among other bands of its ilk. Opener The Gaslight Anthem’s punk-rock beginnings leave a big enough imprint even when the band confidently declines to lean on them. 2010’s American Slang kept evolving the soul-influenced yearnings of the 2008 breakthrough The ’59 Sound, and the new Handwritten contains the single “45,” which is a hunk of classic-rock gold. Seminal punk/hardcore band Hot Water Music, meanwhile, may hail from Gainesville, Florida, but its sound is firmly rooted in the mid-’90s Midwest scene. Back before “emo” was a dirty word (then briefly accepted, and then rejected again), the group traded in the muscular-yet-melodic formula that would go on to define acts like Chicago’s Alkaline Trio.
