Robert Cray has enjoyed more consistent commercial success than many other bluesmen, which has provoked a bit of a backlash from stodgy purists. Those detractors found even more to hate on two recent studio albums, 2005’s Twenty and 2009’s This Time, but for everyone else, the albums provide mellow, old-school soul-blues that recall the heyday of Stax Records as well as Memphis’ musical minister of choice, Al Green. Cray is less of a show-off on guitar these days, preferring to indulge his equally impressive vocals on the newly released Nothin But Love.
