Slightly Stoopid, The Aggrolites, and The Inspector Cluzo at The Rave/Eagles Ballroom
Untangling ska’s traditions from those of mods, skinheads, and punks is pretty impossible; for some reason, disaffected white kids in England have historically been drawn to the soulful sounds of Jamaica, and particularly the proto-reggae wiggle of ’60s ska. It took longer for American punks to catch on, but when they did, they had a tendency to mutilate the music. The Aggrolites, though, are about as good as Stateside ska gets. 2007’s Reggae Hit L.A. is a 16-track blast of faithful, righteously skanking soul swimming in Jackie Mittoo-worthy organ and thunderous reverb. The Aggrolites also served as the backing band on the solo debut of Rancid’s Tim Armstrong, whose Hellcat Records released the group’s 2009 effort IV.
