Stars, Milo Greene, and Said The Whale at Turner Hall Ballroom
As Canadian indie rock has gotten more prevalent in America, it’s also become more familiar and less exciting. That isn’t the case for Montreal’s Stars, a bedroom project that’s blossomed into a solid quintet unafraid to rock out. Its 2007 album, In Our Bedroom After The War, turned heads for its romantic-pop story-songs—and the funky “The Ghost Of Genova Heights.” Stars modernized their formula for 2010’s The Five Ghosts and underwhelmed with dance beats heavy on synths and light on enthusiasm. On the Toronto five-piece’s latest album, The North, the old is blended with the new blends old and new. A touch of sonic glitter and melodic energy gives a little kick to the group’s gently grand compositions, and it goes a long way—there’s a fresh, focused vibe across The North, breathing new life into a band that had become a bit of a chore to listen to.
