Even as hip-hop settles into its fifth decade, the concept of the battle—for respect, for the mic, for recognition above all comers—has remained central in the culture. Here in Milwaukee, the scene has been boosted in large part by battles, most notably the Takeover Freestyle Battle, which has pitted dozens of the city’s best freestyle rappers against one another and pushed them to greater creative heights. Tonight’s final installment in the DJ Bizzon-hosted event will find the winners of the preliminary battles and four “best of the rest” MCs duking it out for fame, glory, and cash prizes.
