Tegan And Sara and Diana at The Pabst Theater
The danceable, buzzy, ’80s-influenced pop-rock of twin-sister-act Tegan And Sara has become increasingly common of late, thanks in part to a tour with The Black Keys and The Killers, as well as the Grammy-nominated Get Along DVD. That means the Quin sisters have finally been getting the credit they deserve for the way they construct and deconstruct songs. More than just a throwback act, Tegan And Sara have a lot in common with Spoon in the way they tug at the edges of classic girl-group pop and R&B, emphasizing rhythmic punch while keeping their melodies clean and lyrics memorable. That they went full-on ’80s Friday-night skate party on their new album, Heartthrob, isn’t a surprise. The sisters have always incorporated candy-coated synths in their music, and, in recent years, they’ve made guest appearances on tunes by techno gods Tiësto, Morgan Page, and David Guetta. Still, the synth-slicked Heartthrob takes some getting used to.
